Medium: Serigraph
My name is Wes Jernigan and I am a creature of the Southwest. I am a retired archaelogist and art historian of the Southwest. A few years before I retired, I began to learn the process of silkscreen print making so I could start a second career as an artist. This medium is technically challenging, but I am gradually getting better at it. In any event, I much enjoy the whole business of making prints from blank paper to framed print.
Some years ago my wife began to write children's books and I did some illustrations for them. A few of these have won awards from Southwestern library organizations. While at Eastern Arizona College I began to make wood sculptures of near monumental size, but these were difficult to move. So I began to learn the techniques of silkscreen, or serigraph, printing. By the time I retired from teaching I had become sufficiently proficient to devote most of my retirement to making prints. These I print by hand using equipment that I have made myself. My original designs reflect both my knowledge of Southwest Indian art and my exposure to the art deco style as a child. They also refer to one of my ancestors who was a Chickasaw leader in South Carolina in the late 1700's.
